How to Remove the Pet Urine Odor from Your Carpet and Furniture
Uh oh! You've just had your carpets cleaned professionally by Zerorez® and you come home to find man's best friend has left his mark! This is one of the most common calls we get at Zerorez, and we've done our best to coach homeowners on how to clean pet urine from their newly cleaned floors using green techniques that won't harm your family with harsh chemicals or solvents.
The following is a list of tips and techniques that we've found are most effective for DIY pet odor removal between professional cleanings.
Remember: No DIY solution is foolproof and may not completely remove stains and odors from all layers of flooring.
Baking soda and vinegar
1. Mix baking soda and water into a paste;
2. Apply the paste to the stained area;
3. Once covered, pour enough distilled vinegar over the area to completely cover the stain;
4. Using a clean towel, blot the stain to pull up all moisture;
5. Rinse with clean water and blot dry with a clean towel.
Cornstarch
1. Apply cornstarch liberally over the stain;
2. Allow to sit for 30-60 minutes;
3. Rinse area with clean water and press firmly with a clean towel to absorb all remaining moisture.
Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda
Important: Before trying this technique, first test the color fastness of your carpet on a small, inconspicuous area. Peroxide can potentially bleach color from carpets if used improperly.
Please note: You are following these instructions at your own risk. If you have doubts, please contact a professional carpet cleaner who can properly assess the situation and advise appropriately. Any type of aggressive scrubbing or rubbing can permanently distort and damage the carpet fibers. If more agitation is needed, use an adjustable spray bottle to spray with more force. Please test all solutions on an inconspicuous spot for color loss/fiber damage - to do this spray the solution on a rag and hold the rag with the spotter on a spot for a period of at least 10 seconds. Check the towel for color that transferred from the carpet, and check the carpet for any distortions or discoloration that may occur.
1. Mix a half cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle;
2. Sprinkle baking soda liberally onto the stained area;
3. Spray the solution onto the baking soda sparingly;
4. Dab the carpet with an old toothbrush;
5. Leave to dry completely;
6. Vacuum the area and repeat all steps if necessary.
Homemade enzyme cleaner
1. Mix 7 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1.5 cups of lemon peels in a medium-sized container;
2. Cover with one liter of water;
3. Mix well, loosen cap on container (to prevent exploding!) and allow to sit for 3 months at room temperature;
4. Use as you would carpet cleaner. Pat, dry and vacuum.
If none of these tips get rid of pet odor and you want to avoid using chemicals or solvent-based pet carpet cleaner, it's time to give Zerorez another call.
