Hiring a professional carpet cleaner like Zerorez® is the most effective way to deal with carpet indentation.

At-home remedies for carpet dents include:

  • using a vacuum
  • ice cubes
  • a hairdryer
  • a steam iron

Today, we shall discuss various methods you can use to fix furniture dents on varying carpet types and when you should engage a professional.

How to Get Furniture Dents Out of Carpets

Some dents are easy to fix, and so are some carpets. Protecting your carpet from carpet dents is critical, as not all dents are fixable; some are permanent.

For example, failing to move furniture for about seven years or more could result in permanent dents, requiring you to replace or repair the carpet.

Here's how to remove furniture dents from carpet:

Option #1: Professional Carpet Cleaning

Hiring a professional carpet cleaner such as Zerorez is one of the most effective ways of removing carpet dents.

Zerorez can remove even deep dents on any carpet type and thoroughly deep cleans your carpets to remove dirt, stubborn stains, and dust.

Zerorez's team also offers excellent advice on how to prevent dents from reoccurring.

Option #2: Ice Cubes

The moisture from cube ice helps carpet fibers slightly inflate back to their initial shape by making them expand.

Materials Needed:

  • Cubes of ice
  • Towel/ microfiber cloth
  • Kitchen fork or fabric brush (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place several ice cubes on the dented area to cover the affected area entirely.
  2. Wait at least one hour or more, depending on the size of the carpet indentation. Larger dents need more time to inflate.
  3. Once the cube ice melts, dab the area with a towel or cloth to remove excess moisture.
  4. Once dry, use a kitchen fork, your fingers, or a fabric brush to restore the carpet fibers to their original state.

Option #3: Apply Steam Using a Steam Iron

Heads up! Don't place the hot iron plate on the carpet. It will damage your iron and ruin the carpet completely. You're only using the steam.

Hot moisture from your steam iron (carpet steamer) helps the carpet fibers stand back up. This is an affordable way of dealing with minor carpet dents. Avoid too much heat or soaking your carpet with steam.

Materials Needed:

  • Steam iron or handheld steamer
  • Water
  • Fork (optional)
  • Vacuum

Directions:

  1. Fill your steam iron with enough water (as the manufacturer recommends).
  2. Turn the iron to the highest temperature. Hold the steam iron 4-6 inches above the furniture mark and then apply steam evenly on the area.
  3. After the carpet absorbs enough moisture, use your fingers (or a fork) to fluff up the fibers to restore their original look.
  4. Vacuum the carpet.

Option #4: Blow Dry

You won't be blow-drying your carpet fibers directly like you do your hair. Hold the blow dryer several inches away.

Materials Needed:

  • Spray bottle
  • Distilled water
  • Blow dryer

Directions:

  1. Put distilled water in a spray bottle.
  2. Spray enough of it on the dented area to make it moist.
  3. Holding your blow dryer 5 to 6 inches from the indentation, turn it on to its highest temperature.
  4. Once the dented area is hot, use your fingers, comb, or fork to help the carpet fibers stand back up.
  5. Finalize by vacuuming.

How to Get Furniture Dents Out of Berber Carpet

Berber carpets are great because they resist stains and withstand high traffic. However, their low pile makes cleaning Berber carpet and fixing dents challenging.

Hiring a professional is best, but it doesn't hurt to try. Don't give up on the first or second attempt. It might take three or more attempts until you notice an improvement in the previously depressed area because Berber carpets hold onto indentation longer than other types.

Using a cloth or rag to loosen a Berber carpet could crush its fibers.

Method 1: Blow Dryer and Ice Cubes

Materials Needed:

  • Fork
  • Ice cubes
  • Blow dryer

Directions:

  1. Gently rub the dented area with cubes of ice to slightly dampen it.
  2. Use a fork's side to gently scrape the carpet until the dented fibers get springy.
  3. Gently lift the depressed fibers using the prongs of the fork.
  4. Coaxing the carpet fibers to restore their original shape, swivel your fork back and forth.
  5. Repeat if necessary.
  6. Blow dry the carpet to dry it. Hold the blow dryer at least 4 or 6 inches away to avoid melting the carpet.

Method 2: Steam Iron

If you don't have ice cubes, use a steam iron. Never iron the carpet directly.

Materials Needed:

  • Cotton cloth
  • Steam iron

Directions:

  1. Place a damp cotton cloth over the depressed fibers.
  2. Using a steam iron and starting at medium temperature, iron the area using the steam setting.
  3. Increase the temperature if necessary and keep checking the progress.
  4. Once done, vacuum the area or fluff it up using your fingers to make the fibers stand back up.

How to Get Furniture Dents Out of Wool Carpet

Deep, large wool carpet indentations may require a professional's attention. Shallow dents may disappear over time if no furniture sits on them or there is no foot traffic.

Ice cubes or a steam iron could be enough to fix a slightly dented wool carpet.

Depending on their severity, an ice pack, vacuum cleaner, brushing and fluffing the carpet, or seeking professional help could help remove dents from a wool carpet.

Option 1: Vacuum

A vacuum cleaner is effective in fixing minor to medium-sized furniture marks.

  1. Attach the brush attachment to the vacuum cleaner.
  2. Set it to the recommended height based on your carpet type.
  3. Hold the vacuum cleaner directly on the dented area, and turn the vacuum cleaner on.
  4. Gently and slowly move the vacuum cleaner back and forth over the furniture marks, allowing the brush to massage the fibers and restore their elasticity and shape.
  5. Repeat the process until the dents disappear.

Option 2: Steam Iron

  1. Dampen a clean piece of cloth or towel with distilled water.
  2. Place the damp cloth on the affected area.
  3. Using the steam setting, heat the iron to medium or high heat and run it over the damp cloth to infuse the fibers with moisture for 10 to 15 seconds.
  4. After 1 to 2 minutes, remove the damp cloth and use your fingers or carpet rake to fluff the carpet fibers to restore their original shape.
  5. If you don't have a steam iron, use a handheld steamer.

Option 3: Brushing and Fluffing Carpet Fibers

Brushing and fluffing the fibers can fix minor and shallow dents and restore the carpet's glory. Don't use excess moisture or direct heat on the wool carpet; these could cause discoloration or shrinkage.

Directions:

  1. Use a carpet rake, fingers, a fork, or a stiff-bristle brush to lift carpet fibers.
  2. Working from the carpet's dented edges towards the center, brush the carpet fibers in different directions. Be gentle when loosening and restoring the woolen carpet's resilience so as not to damage the fibers.
  3. Using a steam cleaner or steam iron, apply steam on the furniture mark as you use your hand (or a soft cloth) to gently fluff and lift the fibers to further relax them.

Option 4: Ice Pack

An ice pack is effective in removing minor furniture dents. To fix dents using ice cubes (or ice packs), follow the same procedure we discussed under 'how to remove furniture dents from carpet'.
