Accidents Happen: How to Clean Them Up
by zeroez
They say, "don't cry over spilled milk," but that's a whole lot harder when the spill is on your new carpet! Unfortunately, accidents happen, and sometimes they're going to happen on your carpet. The good news is that there's almost always a good way to make it right again, and it's easier when you address the problem as soon as possible.
The first step is always to blot up as much of the spill as possible. Don't rub it into the carpet or scrub the stain into the fibers. Gently blot the spill up with a soft cloth or paper towels until you can't get any more. From there, it's time to lift out the stain. Read on to learn how you can recover from some common types of spills and accidents.
Get Soda out of Carpet
Soda stains can usually be removed with a mixture of water and vinegar. The key here is that you don't want to use too much vinegar (or detergent, for that matter) because it can damage your fibers or affect the color. As a rule, about half a teaspoon of vinegar is enough for 32 ounces of water. This same mixture can help with other spills including tea, alcohol, ice cream, or washable paints and inks.
Get Blood out of Carpet
Blood, coffee, wine, and vomit are a little bit more tricky than other stains. In these cases, you may have to use ammonia instead of vinegar or a detergent or shampoo. Keep in mind that whatever you put on your carpet will leave some residue behind.
Get Wax out of Carpet
To help lift wax or oil, put a warm (not hot!) iron on top of the stain over some paper towels. This will lift the wax into the paper towels. Make sure your iron isn't hot enough to burn your carpet or start a fire.
Pet Stain Removal
To clean up after a pet accident, look into a special pet enzyme cleaner. The cleaner may have special instructions on the bottle, but you can generally clean it like everything else: by blotting, not scrubbing, from the outside in.
