3 Easy Steps to Avoid Allergy Triggers
It's spring! The birds are chirping, the sun is warm and the kids areā¦sneezing. Then you rememberā¦it's allergy season!
There are 3 ways to keep allergies at bay:
- Avoidance of the allergen
- Medication
- Immunotherapy (allergy shots)
While we aren't going to medicate you or give you any shots, we can give you some tips on the "avoidance of the allergen" strategy. But if you aren't ready to lock everyone in the house and rip out the carpets and drapes (yes, this is usually the advice you will find to help with your allergies), then check out our 3 easy (and realistic) steps below to avoid allergy triggers.
1. Leave the shoes at the door
The number one way that pollen makes its way into your home is on the bottom of your shoes. It gets tracked into the house and pushed deep into your carpets to endlessly trigger those watery eyes and runny noses. Have a "no shoes in the house" policy during allergy season and you will reduce allergy triggers tremendously.
2. Vacuum frequently
Did someone's shoes make it into the house? It's bound to happen even with your new policy. Keep the vacuum out this season and use it on your carpets daily to keep the pollen at bay. Even better, have us come out to professionally pre-treat and clean your carpets. Zerorez is certified platinum by the Carpet & Rug Institute, who recommends a professional carpet cleaning every 12-18 months.
3. Track the pollen count
There are great sites that you can access on your laptop or phone to actually see when peak pollen count days are (here is a great one from pollen.com). It predicts future pollen levels for an area by identifying patterns in historical pollen indexes and current pollen reports. If possible, try not to plan any big outdoor activities on these days. Or if you have to spend time outside on these day, at least you are aware and can prepare with some extra allergy medicine!
